Zubeida Begum Dhanrajgir was an Indian movie actress, who was the First Talkie Actress of India, as she enacted in first Indian talkie Alam Ara released in 1931.Her credits involve early hits like Devdas released in 1937, and played the lead role in Sagar Movietone's first talkie, Meri Jaan.
Zubeida was one of Indian cinema's earliest super actress and among the few ladies who entered movies at a time when it wasn't aknowledged an appropriate profession for girls from respectable parivaars. Born in Surat, Zubeida was a sizzling beautiful princess, the daughter of the Nawab of Sachin and Fatima Begum.
In 1925, Zubeida had nine releases including Kala Chor, Devdasi, Desh Ka Dushman respectively. A year later she featured in her mother's movie, titled Bulbul-e-Parista. In the year 1927, she acted in films like Laila Majnu, Nanand Bhojai, and Naval Gandhi 's Sacrifice which were very successful films at this time.
Zubeida starred in a bunch of silent movies too before India's first talkie 'Alam Ara’ proved to be the turning point in her acting career and was her biggest success at the box office. In 1934 she set up Mahalakshmi Movietone with Nanubhai Vakil and had another couple of box-office hits in 'Gul-e-Sonobar' and 'Rasik-e-Laila'. The actress continued to feature in one or two flicks a year till 1949. 'Nirdosh Abla' was her last movie.
